PHD- Pure Hard Dance
PHD - Pure Hard Dance - was established in July 2002 & has since been the biggest & best part of the day party & rave scene every Saturday from 7.30am-3pm now at Inflation, Geddes Lane Melbourne.
Beginning at the Sugar Suite, a small bar in Melbourne's cbd in July 2002, PHD out grew the venue in the short time of 8 months & moved to Altitude, also in Melbourne's cbd. Altitude was a much bigger & better suited venue which was at capacity every week. Almost 2 years later, PHD then moved to an even bigger & better venue, F Four. Our stay at F Four was very short lived, one week infact, the crowds that gathered to F Four were so big, surrounding shop front businesses had forced us to move yet again. 8pm Friday night, PHD was out of home, 8.30pm, Scubar became a temparary option & was still full of supporting die hard fans the next day, determined not to let their beloved PHD fade away. The venue immediately offered to become our next permanent home until 3 weeks later when PHD had recieved some very bad & unjust publicity. For 4 days, PHD was front page of every news paper in Melbourne. Much to the disgust of our well formed PHD family, the writers of the articles had recieved an overwhelming amount of complaints & expressions of disbelief. Down but not out PHD then moved to Dream July 23, filling it yet again & Inflation July 30. Hundreds of people have shown us what PHD means to them, continuosly showing their support through the good & the bad. In an attempt to give back to the supporters who travel many miles to get to PHD & as a result of all the moving, PHD then decided to spread the love & tour some regional country areas, interstate & internationally. To date PHD has been to Malaysia, Geelong, Sheparton & Traralgon with Albury, Sydney, Brisbane & Adelaide still to come. Before this decision & when the word was out that Brendan & Jill Soul-T had almost given up, people had quickly & secretly rallied to attempt to convince them not to give up on them. On the 30th of July, the PHD family had presented Brendan & Jill with a number of gifts, a trophy that reads "PURE HARD DANCE THE WORLD'S NUMBER 1 DANCE CLUB", cards & a massive white, beautifully framed PHD hoodie with signatures & messages written all over it, the very first PHD cd, & the cd of that month (July) a photo of Brendan & Jill Soul-T & a plaque that reads "JUST A SMALL TOKEN OF APPRECIATION OF THE HARD WORK THAT YOU BOTH PUT INTO PHD EACH WEEK. THANKYOU FOR CREATING THIS PURE DANCE CLUB WE CALL HOME. Signed THE PHD FAMILY". It's no wonder Brendan & Jill were very emotional that great day at Inflation. PHD is now very comfortably at home at Inflation who have made it a mucher better option in terms of atomshere, sound & production. There has never been a club in history with so many passionate suppoters & the capacity to fill different venues week to week at only a moments notice. Some people have even gone as far as tatooing the PHD logo permantly on their bodies to remind them of their love for PHD & the best days of their lives. PHD is not only a club & brand name, it's a very big family orientated based group doing it for all the right reasons. PHD is & always will be unparelled by any other day club or even weekly event in the scene & still continues to gather interest & support from many other event organisations locally, nationally & internationally, punters & djs alike & has established some what of a cult following. PHD has also toured internationally. Glow 2 in Malaysia in July 2005 & supplied the official promotional cd mixed by Soul-T, official merchandise & PHD director Soul-T who headlined & played a huge set. Most of the PHD team including Jill Soul-T also travelled to Kl. PHD & Soul-T have since returned to Malaysia a number of times & will return alot more in the future.
PHD successfully hosted a very popular room at advant*jah, Kryle Castle in November 2003, which included a market stall that sold out of almost all merchandise in stock on the night. PHD also supplied the official promotional cd for the event mixed by Soul-T. PHD has now hosted a number of Pharmacy events, Digital & Sunshine People with more to come.
PHD is renowned for it's quality of production, Dj's, music, atmosphere & people making it the biggest & best day club Melbourne has ever seen.
PHD is also renowned for its PHD cds mixed by Soul-T given away free weekly & updated monthly. There is now 48/50 different PHD cds in circulation dating right back to the beginning & have become a collector's item for alot of people.
PHD also has a web site that includes everything you need to know both past & present including a weekly updated line up of djs, an about PHD section, a dj profile section, a merchandise section, a photo gallery,a links section & a forum.
The huge range of PHD merchandise has also been as successful. There is not one Melbourne rave or dance event where PHD merchandise is not present. It has become rave uniform. Infact touring Djs will tell you it is also in most countries they have played. Merchandise consists of Hoodies, T-shirts, Sleeveless T-shirts, Singlets, Ladies T-shirts & singlets, PHD Fat Pants & all styles & Colours of Caps. We also have Mouse Pads, Lighters and Pens.

Wat is Melbourne Shuffle?
History
Beginning in the late 80’s in Melbourne's (Australia) underground dance party scene, a revolutionary freestyle dance began to grow and has now developed into one of the most unique and robust dance styles since the birth of Breakdancing.
Initially grown from the roots of Acid House/Techno music along with back stepping and psychedelic arm movements, the Melbourne Shuffle has no set steps but encourages individuality and imagination, incorporating dance moves from numerous styles such as Miming, Popping & Locking, Liquid and Breaking. But the basis of the Melbourne Shuffle has traditionally been the footwork either performed sliding left to right, on the spot or in a triangular direction, but is evolving everyday. When done well Shufflers can seem to be gliding across the dance floor and breaking the rules of gravity.
The Melbourne Shuffle was one of several dances that emerged during the Acid House era. Some have described the main dance styles in that period as Jacking, Stepping and Shuffling. Jacking came first (from overseas) and was the definitive dance methodology for Acid House. It was a dance done in a stationary position and consisted mainly of overhead arm movements with occasional knee-bends and knee-ups whilst bending at the waist. However, as Acid House became more diverse and rhythmically complex and music genres evolved and broke apart, Jacking simply didn't cut it any more and became virtually extinct. Two different, but not mutually exclusive dance philosophies evolved to keep up with the increased rhythmic demands of early techno; 1) The Back-Step and 2) The Shuffle. Since then the Shuffle has continued to evolve in Melbourne nightclubs and events over the years and new concepts such as hat tricks, spins, running on the spot moves and almost anything imaginable have been thrown in over this time. Some of the major events/clubs that took part in the evloution of the shuffle over the years are; Hard Kandy, Bass Station, Every Picture, Hardware, Frantic, Teriyaki Anarki Saki, Earthcore, Pharmacy, PHD, Bubble and GOD.
Wat kind of music
The music that Melbourne Shufflers generally dance to includes various forms of Electronic music such as; Acid Techno, Hard Trance, Hard Dance, Hard House, Psy trance, Breakbeats, Drum’n’Bass amoung other styles of electronic music
Dancing
Generally known as “Rocking” to the Melbourne locals the name "Melbourne Shuffle" has been derived from overseas DJs, partygoers, visitors and the media trying to describe this phenomenon. The Melbourne rave/electronic music dancers don’t generally dance for competition; or to show off, but for themselves, for fun and self-expression. Learning is generally achieved through watching other dancers and incorporating variations into their own style, by which they create an individual style representing their own personality.
Media
The Melbourne Shuffle has remained relatively underground over the years since its birth in the late 80's and early 90's. However, a front page newspaper article appeared in Melbourne's The Age newspaper in 2002, attempting to illustrate what the Melbourne Shuffle was for the first time to the mainstream public because thousands of young Melbournians were shuffling at dance parties every week.
Recently the shuffle has spread to Malaysia in a big way, most likely due to Malaysian students studying in Melbourne, discovering the electronic dance music scene and taking the unique shuffle back with them. Shufflers have also taken thier art form and self-expressive dance style overseas and is a regular sight to be seen at rave parties in the UK, Malaysia, Germany and Thailand. The internet has also been a factor in the spreading of knowledge and interest in the shuffle with thousands of people from around the world downloading videos from the following websites; MelbourneShuffler.com Xes.cx Clept.net
